I’ll be at I Want More Comics  from Noon to 2, with copies of the Outdoorsman and Son of Ymir (for sale, sorry guys, not everything is free), as well as some prints. So come on by, say hi, and at the very least get some of the free comics that I Want More Comics will have available. And maybe buy something from the store; gotta support the local comic shop!

Denver ComicFest – This Weekend!

Published on April 15, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

As some of you may know, Denver ComicFest (part of StarFest) is this weekend, starting Friday April 19th! I’ll be there, along with a number of great local and well-known comic creators. Here’s the official image for this year’s event, which I drew:

Make sure to take some time this weekend to come and see me; I’ll have a table in Artist’s Alley, where I’ll have ample supply of:

  • The Outdoorsman: Bon Appetit – A 24-page Black & White horror extravaganza, with some never before seen artwork! First in the new series!
  • Son of Ymir – A 24-page color viking slugfest! Originally a 24 Hour Comic Day attempt I made, fleshed out!
  • Outdoorsman prints, new and old!
  • Son of Ymir print!
  • Timberline Draw Blog original artwork – A number of the original pieces from my weekly entries on the Timberline Draw Blog, now for sale!

I’ll also be taking commissions, for the first time in quite a while. My rates are on the “Commissions” page here on Blaze Orange Studio. Hit me up with an email if you’d like to get on the list early!

Hope to see you all there!

Cheers

Pinups!

Published on March 14, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

One of the coolest things about creating your own comics, is when it inspires another artist to draw you stuff! And that’s what happened here…

First up, my good friend Kevin Gentilcore, of Creephouse Comics and Teenage Love Zombies fame, jumped all over the chance to draw my newest creation Son of Ymir. Like me, he loves vikings, loves metal, and has an excellent beard. And he created this amazing piece:

“Son of Ymir” by Kevin Gentilcore

And if that wasn’t awesome enough, Mr. Nate Hamel body slammed me with this fine piece of Outdoorsman art!

“The Outdoorsman” by Nate Hamel

Too cool. Both of these brilliant pieces will be featured in the upcoming print versions of the respective books, which I’ll be bringing to ComicFest and Denver Comic Con this summer! Stay tuned for more.

In the meantime, go check out Nate and Kevin’s work…they’re both amazing artists! I can’t thank them enough for these great pinups.

Son of Ymir – Now Available in the B.O.S Store!

Published on March 6, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

Exciting news! I’ve just released the digital version of my new comic Son of Ymir for digital download! You can go to the store here on Blaze Orange Studio, and download a combo PDF/CBZ file back of this 24 page, monochrome color comic! Here’s the cover:

Cover to “Son of Ymir”, a new digital comic from Patrick Hoover

Originally, I created this character and story during 24 Hour Comic Day…and while I didn’t quite finish the inks, I knew I had a story I wanted to polish up and share. It’s a story of a lone viking hero, fighting to protect the innocent against ancient evil. If you love vikings, and smashing foes with a great warhammer…then Son of Ymir is for you! Here’s a quick link to buy it, if you don’t want to click to the store page:

I hope you enjoy it…it was fun to make.

Son of Ymir

Published on February 24, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

Those of you who follow me on facebook, know that I recently announced my latest comic creation, Son of Ymir, early last week. Son of Ymir was my attempt at 24 Hour Comic Day last year, where I got 24 pages pencilled, and about 15 pages inked of my epic viking tale. Over the last few months, I’ve finished inking and adding a monochrome color scheme.  I’m almost done with the cover; in coloring mode.

That said, here’s a character sheet I cooked up for the story’s main hero…

I’ll be releasing this book digitally here on Blaze Orange Studio, and have hard copies for my Denver convention appearances. There’s also a tab on the site here for Son of Ymir, which I hope to be updating with art and stuff soon.

More to come!

The Outdoorsman Animated Series

Published on February 23, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

Animated series!? Just kidding. I recently had a reason to do a character design sheet for our hero, and after finishing it up, it just reminded me of something you’d see in an animated series. That would be pretty awesome, but no, no plans for that at the moment. Here’s the character sheet:

Normally I don’t do these…I have an idea in my head, maybe work some stuff out in sketches, and then it’s right to the drawing board. But it’s something I should work out ahead of time…would likely help my productivity and quality of my work.

Any rate, enjoy!

Denver Comicfest 2013

Published on February 17, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

So I noticed today, that the StarFest and ComicFest sites have been updated, so it’s a safe bet to share this with you..for this year’s ComicFest, I contributed the pinup artwork for the convention. Thanks to Jason Page and ComicFest for the opportunity.

Their theme at Starfest this year is ‘Robot Invasion’; so I went with alien invasion, and drew up some Mars Attacks Denver! Here’s the poster:

“Mars Attacks ComicFest!” ink on bristol, digital colored, 11″x17″

And here’s the original, sans ComiFest logo:

Obviously, I’ll be at ComicFest this year in Artist’s Alley, with the Outdoorsman and various prints, as well as a yet to be announced book. So come see me and a whole bunch of great comic creators at ComicFest this year, April 19th – 21st, at the Hyatt Regency DTC. Go HERE for ComicFest’s website, and more info.

Gouache, and Dark Lords

Published on February 16, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

A few weekends ago, I decided I wanted to get away from the computer, and back to the physical act of making art, and painting seemed a natural way to go. So I went and picked up some cheap gouache (opaque watercolors), and went to it. This was the result:

“Maul” – gouache on cardboard, 11″x17″

When my 4 yr old son saw this, he decided we also needed a Darth Vader to go with it…so…

“Vader” – gouache on cardboard, 11″x17″

I hadn’t done any painting in years…like at least 10 years. So I was quite pleased with the result. I’d also never used qouache before either, and you can see that I started to figure it out between the two paintings. Maul was more solid paint, as I was figuring out how much water to add to the color. Vader is thus more watercolor in nature, as I figured this out.

All and all, a lot of fun. I’ll have to do this again.

WHUMP

Published on February 2, 2013, by in Uncategorized.

Here’s a screenshot from my current work on the redux of my Outdoorsman: Boxenwolves story…

I’m doing this one completely digital, using the amazing Manga Studio 4 EX program to do it. Pencils, inks, wording, the whole damn thing, all via this program on my PC. It’s fun so far, though at this point I still prefer the old pencil-to-paper thing better.

Anyrate, I post these kind of pics all the time on the Outdoorsman’s Facebook Fan Page. So do me a favor and go “like” and “share” it, so you can see little previews like this and spread the word.

More to come…
